Well, that day I pulled up my towel and the stain came right up with it leaving a beautiful, unspotted carpet below. What a feeling of relief! But even better, my customer was absolutely thrilled. I had solved her problem and from that moment on she would call only me for all of her cleaning needs.

And over the years she recommended me to lots of folks, more than I can really count. That nice woman was responsible for putting a lot of food on my table over the years simply because I was able to actually do what my company claimed I could.

After all, it said "carpet cleaning" right there in my company name.

When I look at the spotting kit I use today and then the one I used back then to remove my first spot, what a difference a few decades makes!

I now have a whole bunch of new or dramatically improved products I use every day that I didn't have back then. Products that let me easily remove what I used to have to tell my customer were permanent stains. (I always hated having to do that because it made me feel incompetent even though I knew that I wasn't the one that dripped the mustard in the family room!)

That's the other thing about our industry. The technology keeps evolving. Customers' needs and desires keep changing. And that's why, in my observation, the most successful carpet cleaners are the ones that are committed to staying up on the latest technical skills. They never stop learning.

Not only did he have incredibly loyal customers but he charged a lot more than I did. And as I found out later, his average ticket was nearly three times mine.

This helped me to realize that he was doing something I wasn't. And whatever it was, it was working!

From then on I devoted myself to trying to figure out how to avoid mistakes and figure out what works in the carpet cleaning business. And I really got a chance to do some major research when I ran the multi-city carpet cleaning division for a major department store.
